In 2016 the Australian Regional and Remote Community Services Limited (ARRCS) announced an upgrade and construction of its Terrace Gardens Aged Care Facility in Palmerston. Lahey Constructions were award the main construction contract, with Combined Electrical subcontracted to undertake electrical works and infrastructure upgrades.
The upgrade to the secure facility resulted in the construction of a further 32 bedrooms, some with ensuites, resulting in a site capacity of 88 bedrooms. The new bedrooms and refurbishment combine facilities with larger linked wings resulting in a more efficient aged care living and working environment. New staff amenities were constructed and existing facilities, including common rooms, refurbished. The multi-staged development also included an external landscaping package, a new car park and improved security.
Combined Electrical’s contribution to the electrical upgrade of the facility will provide better facilities and increased generator back-up for critical services within the facility. The works also included new in-ground electrical infrastructure, sub-mains cables, lighting, power, MATV, air-conditioning control and updating distribution boards.
The new 16-bed Gardenia House wing will be built as a designated “cyclone strengthened area”. Combined Electrical installed the essential back-up power generator equipment. With separate water supply and additional window protection, this wing will be used as shelter during cyclonic conditions.
The project is ahead of schedule and is in the final stage of completion. Works were staged which enabled the facility to remain fully operational throughout the installation. Project management was key to ensuring the success of this contract. Buildings were demolished in the middle of the complex, and new buildings were constructed around existing facilities. This proved challenging at times, working within a fully operational facility and accommodating multiple construction phases required full consultation with both the main contractor and stakeholder.
Combined Electrical are proud to have been part of this project knowing that it results in secure and comfortable residential accommodation and care for the aging community.
